While this was not the original design of Infinite City, I have to applaud Brent Keith for pushing me in this direction. This is one of the best looking products in my collection. The Noir look mixed with a modern edge and muted colors was outside my comfort zone. Hopefully, the effect works. At least, I think people like it.

Not even sure I should show this, but I was having fun with this logo and well… the story is funny.

For starters, my home page is set to random, so everyday I get to see another part of the internet. Usually, it's a silly wikipedia entry, but sometimes it's a gem, like this logo

Which is exactly what it looks like, bad clip art rammed together. So, what I first did, was try to replicate it in a modern fashion in Photoshop.

Still ugly, but it includes all the components important to the original design. From there, I decided to go the wooden license plate route, with screws for holders and an embossed look for all the characters.
The problem here, though, is the hideous outer border that Photoshop calls a Stroke Effect. I hope CS4 has more options. Because having to go back in and draw it properly, like so…

is a lot of work.

Photo Manipulation I: Practice

This is my first attempt at Photo Manipulation at this level. This is a very hi-res, hi-quality supercuts ad picture that I've turned into a succubis, vampire girl. Watched a video online where someone did about 1000% more work than I did doing the same thing, but this is good practice.

I painted her nails, gave her tattoos, elongated her teeth, added blood, changed her eye color, added the logo on the shirt, changed the background, and generally added more "grit" to the image.

Below is one more variation on the image. Suitable for Adbusters, I imagine.

I did not paint this traditionally. Instead I pulled together a number of Photoshop elements an textures to produce:

It's certainly not a work of art, but I think it works as a background element or a stand alone texture. It came together easily (I think I got lucky) and I learned a lot about texturing in the process. Some of the things I'd been doing were very wrong. And it helps to experiment.

Let's see if I have any more like that in me.

I found this fantastic photo on a website that offers free use of their photos and I just had to make a mock Generation-Y style album cover out of it. Imagine a band where Fugazi meets TechnoFuzion and Emo. Throw in Unwound, fIREHOSE, and Sugar for graphic sensibility and you've got the following CD cover.

That's the style I was going for.

Oh. And of course, it has to be slightly difficult to read, so it looks like an Indie Label.

Thousand Suns Preview

I recently finished some work for Rogue Games on a forthcoming RPG called Thousand Suns.

I have designed the cover, logo, crest, and all interior elements. We don't have an interior art yet, but the framework for the interior pages is one of my favorite designs to date.

While none of these are official yet, since this and Colonial Gothic have been eating up my days, I thought I would share what I have so far.

Colonial Gothic

I am finishing up the final touches for Colonial Gothic by Rogue Games .

I have designed the cover and all interior elements, although the logo was designed by someone else (. The interior art is sparse and all of it from public domain libraries. I've done what I can to make it all fit.

The SUBHEADER font does not mesh as well as I would have liked with the rest of the book, but I was trying to put a scratched and discordant (modern) perspective on this book, all the while keeping an historical context and still mirroring the old text book look of U.S History. I don't know if it worked or not. Maybe I'm justifying too many bad ideas. Who knows? Maybe I've just been looking at this too long?

But, I'm moving forward onto a sci-fi project with the company where the interiors are A LOT stronger.

I'll post those in a few days.

This book is going to the printer this week and we'll have it in our hands at GENCON.

We do MOCK UP packaging for start ups and so on. We have clients as big as Yamaha and as small as Mom and Pop. Recently we did a vodka bottle and some scrapbooking kits.

American Express

You may not be able to see it very clearly, but that little logo at the bottom center.

I designed that.

For AMEX.

It took me less than an hour and they LOVED it.

The key to logo design, in advertising, I find, is simplicity and knowing the client. I'd only been at Bates-Lee for 3 hours when I did this, but I'd already done a three week stint at Precis Analog working for AAA and the change was seemless. There's no great leap of logic from AAA travel to AMEX travel. The tone and structure of their ads is deliniated by a simple shift in colors and stock photos.

While I downplay my role here, I am proud of the work I did for AMEX, although some of it is just downright hideous, as they forced us to put too much information on a page. I also worked on a DINING guide for them and made this cover.

And speaking of AAA, here's the very first thing I ever designed for them.

And while I'm thinking of it, I should point out that on a scale of 1 to 10, my logo design talent is about a 1.2. I can't draw. I can't paint. And my conceptualizing skills have been severly diminished by what I know I can do, vs. what I would like to see done. I've actually taken a step backwards in this regard.

Nate Barnes sent me a logo he did for a board game recently and I just about wanted to kill myself it's so good. But it's not a PEPSI style logo, which is what I really want to be doing. It's a heavily textured, over-the-top piece of art, masquerading as a logo. It's fantastic, but it would take hours to distill it down into a simple ICON you can recognize from space.

I'll post it here when I can, just to show off how good it is. But the project is hush-hush at the moment, so I can't divulge any other information.

Let me end on a completely different design I did for STRATEGICON four years ago.

I love the weight and the shape here. This is when I was just learning Adobe Illustrator, but my eye was still fresh with new ideas. (I feel) I pulled all the elements together and really sold the idea of a fun event with this picture. The dice are just clip art and I would much rather DRAW something like that now, but it was a long time ago, before I was really comfortable with the pen tool. I also came up with the slogan at the bottom, something I love doing, even if the client never uses it.

My web banners are filled with stuff like that.

Singapore

This ad is sort of a funny story. I was up late one night, looking through istockphoto.com and I came upon this photo of a woman in a qi pao. The dress is very Chinese, but her features are more Southeast Asian, perhaps Pacific Island. But I was struck by the composition of the photo (no matter how symettric) and I knew I wanted to do something with it.

So I searched the internet for anything I could about Singapore and I found the visitsingapore.com website. I took some ad copy and the Uniquely Singapore "tag" and I created a quick 1/3 page ad using that art.

Now. Here's the fun part. I made a few variations and using some other art from gettyimages.com, I slapped together four different versions of the same ad. The thing I really learned about ads from this project was that it's very hard to work with STOCK photos without looking STOCK. While it's nice to give a client lots of options, it's hard to build a campaign around photos that have no connected theme.

Working on fantasy and gaming art, it's a little different, because the art director (hopefully) orders art that looks similar, has the same lighting and/or rendering, and generally conveys the same message about your WORLD/BRAND.

But working off a STOCK PHOTO site, you have fewer and fewer options with collages and such. Unless of course, you spend a few dozen hours looking for stuff all from the same photographer. This is certainly not my best work. In fact, if I had to do it all over again, I'm not sure I'd limit myself with such a narrow art space. The photo and ad copy are great and this really should be a stronger piece. Ideally, if the client wanted, I would have spent about fours hours on mock-ups before going to finals.

This is amateur work, in that regard, but good practice for real ads I would later do for SUZUKI, AMEX, and IHOP.

Scrapbooking Textures/Packaging

I landed a freelance gig on some packaging for kids scrapbooking. While nothing here is DONE -- this is just the backgrounds, after all -- I was pleased with how some of these came out, considering these are just sketches.

Strategicon: Web Banners

As the Art Director/Graphic Designer for a local game convention, I have a lot of power/responsibility that is very difficult to reconcile against a client's inability to understand my job function. While it's great to just open a file and go sometimes (as you'll see below), it can get frustrating to make 50 web banners for the company and never see any of them used. In addition to making these, I also wrote all of the copy for them, making them up as I went.

Some of them are silly, but that's the point.

Some of the designs are bad, but that's part of my sketch process. I just see where ideas take me. Toward the end, the design gets solid and the colors and fonts mix very well. However, the format also gets tired by the 15th "Got Milk" joke.

The other frustration, is working without art. The horse icon was made by someone else (don't know who), but that rest of the design is all mine. Trying to make a banner interesting WITHOUT flashing and blinking art is not easy. Doing it 50 times is an extreme challenge.

Below are all the web banners I made for Strategicon: ORCCON 2007, over the course of about 2 hours. The best ones are at the bottom.

I have done similar work for Green Ronin, which I will post later.

Logo Time V

This is the final installment of logos for a while. I wanted to test myself on how many I could do and how quickly I could do them. At the moment, I'm working too fast and I'm not thinking some of these designs through. I'm also trying to use every font I have to design logos and that's an extremely limiting challenge.

It's a great challenge, but a limiting one.

Below you''ll find a series I did in just over an hour. Some are in Illustrator and others started in Illustrator and then were ported over to Photoshop.

At bottom, are a row of logos for something called Bavaria. I'm not sure if it's a travel agency or the region of Bavaria asking others to come, but all the mountains are clip art and all the designs really need about 30 more minutes each to pinpoint precise color combinations. These designs are far too simple.

Cambria is also clip art.

Of this series, Mecca is my favorite (I drew the temple for that one). I think thematically it all comes together and the name can easily change to anything. Lost and Alchemy are pretty good, too. The range of textures and colors is nice and while layered effects can be an easy way out of a bad design, when they are measured correctly, you can create all sort of effects with them.

Since I do not own a lot of the over-the-top filters for photoshop, I've learned how to mimic things like SNOW with just a few choice combination of filters.

Again, I worked for a couple of hours on some logo ideas. This time I worked with textures and layers in Adobe Photoshop to create a few variations on a similar theme. While every instructor I've ever had believes Photoshop and Illustrator do they same thing, for me they are very very different. Different industries draw upon the different tools of each of these programs and I've never worked in two places that used either/both the same way.

Real Estate companies, for instance, just wanted soft, sandy gradients for the back of their fliers and would prefer to use Illustrator for map drawing. Restaurants and Travel only use Photoshop for color correction and don't know what Illustrator is. Automotive companies make incredible demands on the chrome filters and cloning tools of Photoshop. And so on.

Anyway. You didn't come here to read nonsense. Below, you'll find a few designs looking for a home.

Logo Time I

It's been a few weeks since I've used Adobe Illustrator for anything. I was starting to have withdrawls. I really love just making up (corporate-style) logos for companies that don't exist...and I have a penchant for green. Some of these are good, some of these are lazy. I made a lot of different company designs, rather than numerous sketches for the same company, just as a change of pace.

Below are about ten ideas for logos. Nothing ground-breaking, although I thought KNOCKKNOCK could be used for something cool. Perhaps a luggage company. The nice part, is that the company titles, colors, and fonts are completely changeable. So if there's a good idea here, I can turn it into something else later.

Anyway. Enjoy.

Finally, I have the second drawing I've ever done in Illustrator. I found a cool spider online, that I liked, and I traced it. It's ideal for a logo that requires a SPIDER... perhaps a WEB BROWSER link or something. Just add some web-like HEXES behind it and you're done.

Walk the Plank

I just finished up the production work on a card game for Green Ronin. I also did the art direction (commissioning) and all aspects of graphic design on this one. Very similar to my work on Escalation, but much tighter this time.

The colors were far too dark on Escalation and so the light blue fade looks much stronger on this cover. This artwork is by Ramsey Hong and the game releases this year, from Green Ronin.

While I'm at it, I should show off the cover to Escalation as well, which was painted by Beth Trott. The box colors are too dark, but the inside of the game looks great. And everything matches. The same shade of green, throughout.

The feather in my cap for this project is a. Reiner Knizia's name on the cover and b. this is the first time I was literally responsible for EVERY SINGLE step of graphic design and production work on a game. From concept to design to production to collection to posting to a site. While AEG was once a company very similar to this, we never had this level of follow-through. Someone else was always responsible for one step in that chain, no matter what was going on. So, it was interesting to see how early planning saves so much time on the backend.

Although I ended up making the pdfs three times because the printers couldn't make up their minds about format.

Kitchen Kombat

I recently completed a the graphic design on a pdf card game for Rogue Games (rogue-games.net) as well as the menu (rulebook) and logo. The logo took some work, but it's one of the coolest I've ever done. You have to look at it closely to see a lot of the little details I added, which sort of go to waste with a 72 dpi downloaded pdf, but then again, I needed the practice.

I don't think I need to say much else, the design speaks for itself.
